Charis Brown-Tobias is a Toronto-based visual artist. Her bold style reflects her background in graphic design. Portraying single ideas or moods without excessive elaboration, her paintings capture fragments of scenes, stories and characters. Using a frame-within-a-frame format creates a window through which to look. Removing all background information focusses the viewer on a specific moment. Some part of the subject always breaks out of the frame, suggesting that there is more to the scene than we can see, leaving the viewer to fill in the blanks.
