Paul Brandejs
Paul Brandejs was born in the Czech Republic and immigrated to Canada with his parents, who settled in Saskatoon. As a teenager he attended summer painting courses at Banff School of Fine Arts. He received three scholarships that enabled him to study under Ilda Lubane, an artist who had a profound impact on his work.

His passion for painting led him to study Fine Art at the Ontario College of Art. He holds a four year Diploma in Fine Arts and a Diploma in Communications & Design/Editorial Design. His final year of Fine Arts study was spent in Florence, Italy, studying under Canadian Figurative Artist Tom La Pierre.

Paul has developed a unique art style, painting on sculpted canvas with a variety of acrylic techniques. He creates his own stretcher frames which define the individual pieces as much as the actual application of paint onto the canvas.

Artist Statement
The creation of my sculpted canvases does not start with the first brush stroke. It starts with the first cut by a saw. The visualization and creation of the supporting stretchers is an integral part of my creative painting process.

The stretcher is what initiates and defines the direction each individual piece will travel in its creative cycle. It defines how the canvas stretches and molds creating unusual and sometimes unexpected surfaces which support the creative flow of the paint.

The shape and texture of the canvas is a catalyst to unlimited creativity. By combining multiple components into one cohesive piece, I am able to explore yet another dimension. I am fascinated and intrigued in how far I can push canvas from a traditional square or rectangular shape that hangs on the wall.
