Bill Kort
Bill began his art studies at Central Technical School of Art in Toronto where he produced abstract paintings in a school driven by realism. Upon graduation he studied philosophy at the University of Toronto, then traveled and lived in Mexico and New York City. His exhibition record includes shows at: Carleton University, University of Manitoba, Simon Fraser University, Los Angeles County Museum, and in Toronto: Denison Gallery, Wynick/Tuck Gallery, Juten Gallery, Painted City, Gallery One and the University of Toronto. In 1979 Kort returned to Toronto where he continued to live and work as a full-time artist and writer until 2004. He is now painting and teaching art and English in China. For Kort the final test of a painting is its visual impact, but inevitably his work explores the conditions under which that impact is formed and developed. “To make Art, indeed to make any object or perform any activity, one must understand the Culture one lives in. Culture forms the matrix within which one ‘makes’ and ‘acts.’ An artist must have some craft to produce art but he must also have a conception of its use; that is, a conception of art’s social function; a conception of the ritualistic practices that gave rise to and continue to sustain the production of art.”
